Palmer brothers in Cincinnati

The Cincinnati Bengals have signed Jordan Palmer, Carson’s younger brother, to a two-year deal.

Jordan Palmer was ready to continue his football career in Phoenix with the city’s Arena Football team, when the Bengals made him a rather unusual offer. Jordan was given the opportunity to back-up his older brother Carson at quarterback. He quickly accepted the team’s two-year offer and was headed to Cincinnati. It’s not unusual for brother’s to man the same team however, it is unusual for brother’s to man the same position, especially one as important as QB.

“Someday we’ll look back and laugh about it and think it was pretty cool,” said Jordan in a phone interview with ESPN.

According to the Elias Sports Bureau, no two brothers have ever played quarterback for the same team during the Super Bowl era.

Carson has had the more accomplished career of the two, winning the Heisman trophy and becoming the number one overall pick in the 03′ Draft. Before suffering a severe knee injury, Carson led Cincinnati to the playoffs in 2005.

Jordan, who’s five years younger then his older brother, set school records at Texas-El Paso by throwing for 11,084 yards and 88 touchdowns. He was drafted by Washington in the sixth-round last year, and he played in one pre-season game before being waved early into September. He stayed in shape and hoped for a second shot at the NFL. After finally giving up on his NFL career, he signed to the the Arizona Rattlers and was ready to leave when he got Cinci’s offer.

“We both understand that this is a job,” Jordan Palmer said. “We need to keep it very professional. The fact that we’re brothers is something for on the side. My job is trying to make the team, which is different from his job as the starter.”

I’m interested to see how the tandem turns out, I’d like to see Jordan steal the number two QB slot from Ryan Fitzpatrick and cover his older brother’s injuries and mishaps.
