The Lenovo ThinkPad X300: Macbook’s Best Competition?

The X300 might just become the Macbook Air’s toughest competition yet. It’s Intel Santa Rosa processor is complemented by a 64GB SSD, and there’s enough space for up to 4GB of memory. It’s Ultrathin DVD Burner allows you to watch DVD’s on the 13.3″ widescreen display, and does so at 1440 x 900 resolution. The Lenovo ThinkPad is equipped with Bluetooth connectivity, 802.11 a/b/g/n Wi-Fi, Wireless USB and GPS. It’s even rumored to ship with 3 USB ports, a Mic-in, Headphone-out, VGA adapter, a built-in web camera and stereo speakers. All this in a 2.5 pound package, making for an ultra-portable machine.

See, the Macbook Air only comes with one USB port, a non-replaceable battery and no optical drive. So let’s say your on a business trip, and forgot your Macbook Air charger at home. Your battery is running low, but you need the machine for a 45 minute presentation. Do you go to the presentation and begin your demonstration only to have your computer die half-way through the meeting?

This isn’t a problem with the ThinkPad. It has a removable battery, meaning you can carry an extra battery just in case of an emergency. The Macbook Air’s resolution is also on the low side at 1280 x 800, or at least compared to the X300.

Sure, the Macbook Air’s sleek, slim, shiny design blows the ThinkPad’s rubbery-black body out of the water. The truth is, the Levano ThinkPad X300 is the real deal in ultra-portable computing. It’s powerful, portable and looks like it will out preform the competition. It’s release date and price are TBD. Stay tuned!
